At first, a dark smudge appears on the horizon. Slowly, it transforms into what might be a desert oasis before slowly revealing itself as the central homestead of an enormous working ranch complete with barns, grain silos, and garages for heavy machinery. Protected from the sun by a small copse of trees and seen from a distance, these giant ranches stand in contrast to the abandoned, century-old houses that are slowly crumbling into the prairie. However, despite the up-close size of these ranches, they are dwarfed by the scale of the high desert landscape, a reminder that nature is still the dominating force here.
